THE HISTORY OF THE MDV VIGIL
The vigil started three years ago, in 2005, by a pitbull owner and the founder of the My Dog Votes T-Shirt company, to stand in solidarity with dog owners in Ontario, Canada, who were also holding a vigil to mark the enactment of the province-wide breed ban, and as the means to commemorate the breed ban that had just been re-enacted in Denver.
In 2005 - we posted it on the DogPolitics.com blog to tell the world that these horrific laws were killing innocent dogs - and hurting good dog owners. Today - the vigil as grown from 24 locations in 2005 to over 200 locations scheduled for 2007.

Save Stu- City Goes Mute, Board President Joins Dark Side
Reposted with permission from the "blog" at http://myspace.com/save_stu
There seems to have been a coup d'état in the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services.
On June 25, at the LA Animal Services commission meeting, the City Attorney, Mr. Lesel, told the public and the commission that my dog, Stu could be moved from his concrete cage of 2 years to a rescue org. ---2 weeks after that, at the July 9 meeting there was to be a vote, but the GM, Boks changed the agenda item on Stu to a non voting item and made it a discussion item only so no action could be taken. This is part of Mr. Boks’s personal campaign against me for which he uses my dog's suffering to frustrate me.
The City Attorney for Animal Services said then, on July 9, that he would research what could legally be done to exonerate Stu in light of the new information. Again, they postponed his transfer to rescue pending the worrisome "liability" issues brought up by Commissioner Quincy, known to have been heard to say that "all pit bulls are killing machines."
Although Stu is a mutt he gets the pit bull treatment. City Attorney, Dov Lesel said he would research liability issues involving Stu's move to rescue, too and report to the commission July 23. All week, I have been awaiting the agenda posting for the Monday Meeting. Ms. Riordan and Ms. Atake have been insisting that the Commission's word and the word of the CA be honored and that Stu be on the agenda with a voting item for his rescue.
Board President Tariq Khero assured various people that Stu's case would be on the agenda for the 7/23 meeting...it is , of course ,an election year for him.
The agenda was posted today at
http://laanimalservices.com/about_commission.htm
with none of Stu's issues on it, which means they have chosen to circle the wagons, ostracize Ms. Riordan and Ms. Atake---possibly remove Ms. Riordan because Mr. Boks despises her intelligence and morality and leave my dog , Stu to rot until the 2nd district court of appeals rules sometime in 2008.
It's kind of what I expected...I don't hope for much from those people except for Ms. Atake and Ms. Riordan.
Khero has gone to the Dark Side....I guess to further his career in City Politics. Why should he be any different?
It appears that Mr. Khero has agreed to be a rubber stamp for the GM, Boks and his whacked out policies and personal vendettas at the expense of my dog and many other thousands of animals.
The election for officers of the Board will take place at the Monday , July 23 meeting. Last year, when Kathy Riordan was unanimously elected to yet another term as President, Bickhart or Blackman (what's the difference?), from the mayor's office passed her a note on a Mayoral notepad to decline the position and not "play games." That scandalous note was then published in one of the City papers within days.
Without Riordan’s resistance and penchant for fairness and humane treatment, Boks can steamroll the commission to act (or not act) as he pleases. He has just done that by sweeping the case of Stu's rescue under the rug...again.
By the way, The City Administrative Code states that the Commission runs the Department. not the GM...and that the GM answers to the Board of Commissioners.
This weekend, Animal Rights activists are convening in Los Angeles at the LAX Westin for a 3 day conference. I will be down there spreading the word that the current Animal Services GM has railroaded the Commission and refuses to release my innocent dog to rescue. They all know anyway but I must go there and try to get more support for my poor dog. Hopefully the Commission meeting on Monday will be crowded. This is worth taping as it could be very explosive.
Now we must have Mr. Khero removed and/or protest any nomination of Mr. Khero to another term as president of this Commission.
The 5 sitting commissioners are the individuals who may vote for president and vice president. They are:
Kathleen Riordan
Tariq Khero
Marie Atake
Glenn Brown
Archie Quincy Jr.
They're email addresses are here in another blog post at http://myspace.com/save_stu. I will repost them later, although faxing is a more effective means to communicate with suits.
Mr. Khero, the current and most likely future president is a lawyer at the law firm in the link below:
A concerned citizen might consider flooding this firm with phone calls, emails and faxes on Monday, July 23 and forever afterward -- asking the partners why they employ such a man and in what light would a Los Angeles Ethics Commission investigation into Mr. Khero's questionable behavior at the Dept. of Animal Services might cast "the firm."
