How To Stop Breed Bans - New eBook

I started writing DogPolitics blog over three years ago, ignited by the issue of breed specific legislation after rescuing my dog - a "pitbull" mix - from the streets of Newark, NJ.

Since that time, breed bans and other forms of breed-specific legislation have spread like wildfire across the United States, Canada and around the world.

Sadly, thousands of innocent dogs have been literally snatched from the arms and homes of loving dog owners, OR dumped in shelters, condemned to die - all due to breed specific legislation.

The proponents of BSL include not just ignorant local legislators, but the very organizations that portray themselves as helping animals.

I am speaking explicitly about the Humane Society of the United States and PETA - organizations that directly support and promote breed specific legislation.

The efforts by PETA and HSUS to advance breed specific legislation are a betrayal of trust that so many give, and disservice to those desperately workingso hard  -but worst of all, PETA & HSUS spell nothing but homelessness, fear and death for dogs that look a certain way.

We know first hand, as those of us who own "targeted breeds  or have the courage stand up to fight BSL have been painted by HSUS & PETA as criminals, drug dealers, or dog fighters.

The latest spin from PETAphiles and the supporters of HSUS now casts us as greedy, evil dog breeders and puppymillers. 

I can assure you I am none of those.

I can also assure you that, in stark contrast to the image of pitbull owners that PETA & HSUS consistently portrays to the media, I neither a drug dealer, or a gang member.  I am not a hoodlum.

Blacks and Hispanics should be outraged. There is no doubt that PETA & HSUS have deliberately used racism to drive the media hype and public fear. 

I am all about breaking that stereotype & the HSUS/PETA myth.

I am a white, middle-aged female.   I am a wife,  I am a mother.  I do not show dogs. I do not breed dogs. I only own rescued animals.  I'm a liberal and a registered voter.

And now I'm really pissed off.

So to help level the playing field for the thousands of innocent dogs and their owners  who are fighting to stop BSL -  and fighting a match that's been fixed from the start - I've decided to add my 2 cents - in the form of an eBook.

Dear Oprah - Profiting From Puppymills, HSUS & Wayne Pacelle

On this day , the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, it is the ultimate irony that Oprah's broadcast today will feature an "expose" on puppymills with none other than the leader of the Humane Society of the United States - Wayne Pacelle.

Ironic in the sense that Oprah, as a revered and iconic African American and a woman who has broken so many racial and gender barriers, would invite HSUS  -  an organization responsible for facilitating the racial profiling, redlining, and the deprivation of basic civil rights of so many people - especially African Americans, Latinos and other people of color.

In my corporate life,  I have helped many of the world's largest companies and most recognizable brands build diversity communications campaigns - campaigns which break racial or gender stereotypes,  address hidden racism, and communicate tolerance and respect.

There is no question that puppymills, bad shelters and others who keep animals in filthy, cruel and inhumane conditions are issues that need to be in the spotlight and addressed.

But to invite the Humane Society if the United States  - an organization that deliberately fans the flames of racism in order to profit financially and advance a covert legislative agenda - shows that Oprah may have once again been duped.

So here is my letter to Oprah, which I hope you will share:

Animal Lovers Sue Los Angeles County - Charges Of Abuse & Neglect

From The No Kill Advocacy Center:

The national No Kill Advocacy Center, Cathy Nguyen, a volunteer animal rescuer, and Rebecca Arvizu, a Los Angeles County taxpayer and animal rescuer, have jointly filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County, its Department of Animal Care and Control, and the Department’s Director, Marcia Mayeda.

The lawsuit alleges unlawful and abusive treatment of animals at all six Los Angeles County animal shelters.

Among the allegations in the 29-page complaint filed today in Superior Court, the County Department of Animal Care and Control routinely:

Guilty! Tammy Grimes Did The Crime, Will Tammy Grimes Do The Time?

Last night, Tammy Grimes of Dogs Deserve Better was found guilty of theft and receiving stolen property for taking an ailing, 19-year-old dog named Jake from a yard in East Freedom, then refusing to return him to his owners.

It took the jury took less than 30 minutes to convict her of the charges, according to the local paper, the Altoona Mirror.

Inronically, Tammy Grimes' conviction came the very same day that the U.S. Senate passed the Farm Bill with a provision (pushed by Last Chance For Animals) that makes pet theft a federal issue.

CBN News ( Christian Broadcasting Network) has just aired a piece about microchipping livestock, pets and people, entitled, Is There An ID Chip In Your Future?

Dr. Alan Beck is the man who runs Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Center of the Human-Animal Bond, and - IMHO -  it is a post he does not deserve to hold.

In an article  that appeared earlier this week in the Indianapolis News and Tribune on pitbulls, Dr. Beck made quite a few comments that not only fly in the face  of science, but are a slap in the face to every pitbull owner and rescuer on this planet.

"This breed alone is a risk of serious public health factors," Beck said. "We are keeping them alive

New Rochelle Police Demand Photo ID From Dog Owners

"Let me see your papers!"  Police in New Rochelle, New York are demanding to see the PHOTO ID of innocent dog owners who are walking in the park with their dogs.

Gee - the last time I checked, this wasn't Nazi Germany. 

Gee - the last time I checked - it was illegal and unconstitutional for police to stop a citizen and demand identification - for no reason. 

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson and members of the mostly Democratic City Council  have been taking their cues from the current administration and their penchant for dispensing with democracy and those nasty old documents - the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

That's right, dear readers, the Mayor and city council have turned New Rochelle into a police state. The city is sending armed police into Ward Acres Park to scour for dog owners and demanding their photo ID. 

Can you say unconstitutional?  Can you say civil rights? Can you say 4th Amendment?

Pet Massacre In Puerto Rico - Mayor Condones Raids After Warning Of No Pet Policy

There has been a pet massacre in the town of Barceloneta in Puerto Rico, according to the AP.

Animal control contractors conducted a mass raid on pet owners residing in housing projects there, coming in the night and seizing dogs and cats from innocent and unsuspecting pet owners. 

Their crime?  Owning a pet.

"They came as if it were a drug raid," said Alma Febus, an animal welfare activist. "They took away dogs, cats and whatever animal they could find. Some pets were taken away in front of children."

This who story stinks - as does the Mayor Sol Luis Fontanez who hired the killer animal control contractors.

Fontanez said the city hired Animal Control Solution to clear three housing projects of pets after warning residents about a no-pet policy. 

The AC contractors were paid SIXTY DOLLARS PER HEAD! to "recover" the dogs and cats, which were then "injected with a sedative" on their way to a "shelter".

But instead, the animals were tossed like trash off a bridge, where their rotting carcases were then covered in lime to stop the stench. 

Hey - why waste gas money taking them all the way to the shelter to kill them there?

Sounds like PETA was on the job - after all, euthanizing innocent animals in the back of a truck is what they do best, and if PETA"s lawyers are advisign these guys -why they'll all get off on a "littering" charge.

Mayor Fontanez said, "This is an irresponsible, inhumane and shameful act," he told The Associated Press.

Let me get this straight - Mayor Fontanez is blaming the contractor?

But apparently he think's it was OK to conduct a mass raid on pet owners in the night, seize animals likethey were drugs, deprive people - poor people - of due process, and rob them of their property - namely their animals.

Sounds like a great election platform to me - maybe someone should tell Mayor Fontanez that My Dog Votes.

The New NAIS - How the USDA & Special Interests Have Conspired To Implement Mandatory Microchipping

Every dog owner, animal owner, and indeed every American should be aware that  freedom, privacy and liberty are all at stake.

This goverment has a new an insidious plan to push the  National Animal ID - aka NAIS - through the backdoor - and you will be alarmed - if not sickened - at the coercive tactics that the USDA  - our goverment - is using against people, including manipulating children.

NAIS is a plan backed by giant agri-biz and chip manufacturers that demand the mandatory microchipping of all "livestock" animals and the mandatory registration of your premises in a federal database if you own a"livestock" animal - even if it's just one - one chicken, one horse, one goat, etc.

Under NAIS - animals must all be chipped, and you must report to the government when you leave your premises with your animal,  report the birth, death etc. of your animals - so that the goverment can track you and your animals movements.

While the initial NAIS rollout is for "livestock", ALL pet owners should read this with the knowledge that dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, and all other domestic pets are not excluded from National Animal ID.  That's because after contacting the USDA several times, they have refused to rule out the future inclusion of pets in the NAIS plan.

This "new" version of NAIS will still  use mandatory microchipping as the means to conduct mass surveillance of animal owners and their movements - and that what you do with your animal, where you go with your animal, and who you associate with will be tracked by the government.

Dr. Mary Zanoni, the author of the paper below, is one of the country's leading authoirities on NAIS - National Animal ID.  She is also an attorney that has served the U.S. Attorney's Office.  This is not theroy - nor is it conjecture.

Mandatory microchipping of pets is already in place in Europe, Asia and in parts of South America -The key difference is that we live in a democracy, and surveillence of citizens violates civil liberties.
